What Is root canal therapy?
Root canal therapy is a dental procedure that lets your dentist save a tooth when its dental pulp becomes diseased. This pulp provides your tooth with nutrients, blood vessels, and nerves essential for maintaining its health and strength. Generally, it is a straightforward process that causes little to no discomfort for most patients.
What is involved in root canal therapy?
In this procedure, your dentist will numb the tooth and the surrounding area. The dentist will create an opening through the crown of the tooth into the dental pulp chamber. Through this opening, your dentist will gently remove the diseased dental pulp from inside the tooth. The empty dental canal and pulp chamber leading to the tooth root will then be thoroughly cleaned and checked to ensure that all diseased tooth matter has been removed. Once this is completed, your dentist will fill the pulp chamber and place a temporary filling over the tooth hole.
During your second appointment, the temporary filling that was applied during your previous procedure will be replaced with either a permanent filling or a dental crown. The type of dental restoration you receive will depend on your personal preference and the location of the tooth in your mouth. If you decide to have a filling, you can choose between a traditional dental amalgam or a tooth-colored dental composite material.
